To adopt a child in Texas, the adopting adult must:

  • Be at least 21 years of age, financially stable and responsible, and a mature adult
  • Complete the Application Process
  • Provide information regarding the applicant’s background and lifestyle
  • Provide relative and non-relative references
  • Be single, married or divorced. Married applicants will be required to show proof of marriage and divorced individuals will have to show proof of divorce
  • Agree to a home study which includes visits with all household members
  • Allow staff to complete a criminal history background check and an abuse/neglect check on all adults in the household
  • attend free training to learn about issues of abused and neglected children

Please Note: In some cases, Abused and Neglected Children Training, is required. The training provides the family and the family’s agency an opportunity to assess whether foster care or adoption is best for the family.  The family may withdraw from the meetings at any time. There is no charge for the meetings. Foster/adoptive parents generally train together.
